You must be of legal age
You must be at least 21 years old to use the offshore operators we cover, or the operator's own stated minimum, whichever is higher. Some operators set 18+; many require 21+. Gambling by anyone under the legal age is never acceptable. Keep accounts, devices and payment methods away from minors.
Gambling is entertainment, not income
The single most important habit is treating gambling as a cost, like a movie ticket or a night out. Decide before you play what you can afford to lose, and stop when you hit that number. A few simple rules keep it healthy:
- Only gamble with money you can afford to lose.
- Set a time and money budget before you start.
- Never chase losses — trying to win it back is how small losses become big ones.
- Don't gamble to cope with stress, boredom or low mood.
- Don't gamble while under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
- Take regular breaks and keep gambling in balance with the rest of your life.
Warning signs of a gambling problem
Problem gambling builds gradually. Watch for these signs in yourself or someone close to you:
Common warning signs
- Chasing losses — betting more to win back what you've lost.
- Spending more than planned — regularly blowing past your budget.
- Borrowing to gamble — using loans, credit or others' money to play.
- Hiding it — lying about how much or how often you gamble.
- Neglecting responsibilities — work, family or bills slipping because of gambling.
- Restlessness or irritability when trying to cut back or stop.
- Gambling to escape problems or relieve anxiety and depression.
- Failed attempts to stop — repeatedly trying to quit without success.
If several of these sound familiar, reaching out early makes a real difference. The resources below are free and confidential.

State helplines
Many states run their own confidential helplines in addition to the national line. If your state isn't listed, the national line at 1-800-GAMBLER serves every state.
| State | Helpline |
| California | 1-800-426-2537 (1-800-GAMBLER) |
| Florida | 888-ADMIT-IT (888-236-4848) |
| Georgia | 1-800-715-4225 |
| North Carolina | 877-718-5543 |
| Texas | Use the national line — 1-800-522-4700 |
Practical limits are your first line of defense, and most operators build tools right into the account settings. Use them before you need them:
- Deposit limits. Cap how much you can deposit per day, week or month. Set this the day you sign up, while you're thinking clearly.
- Loss and wager limits. Where offered, cap total losses or total staked over a period.
- Session reminders and time-outs. Get a nudge after a set time, or lock yourself out for a short cool-off — often 24 hours to a few weeks.
- Self-exclusion. Close access for a longer stretch, from months to permanently. Once set, a genuine self-exclusion should not be reversible on a whim.
Important — offshore operators are different. The operators we cover are licensed offshore and are not part of US state self-exclusion programs. If you self-exclude with one offshore site, that does not block you at any other site, and no state register will enforce it. You must use each operator's own limit and self-exclusion tools, one site at a time. For a stronger safety net, install a device-level blocker such as Gamban, GamBlock or a GAMSTOP-style filter, which blocks gambling sites across your phone and computer regardless of where the operator is licensed.
Worried about someone else?
You don't have to be the person gambling to be affected by it. If a partner, family member or friend is struggling, the national helpline can guide you too, and Gam-Anon exists specifically for people close to a problem gambler. Approach the conversation with concern rather than blame, and point them toward the resources above.
Keep it fun
If gambling has stopped being entertainment, take a break and reach out. Help is free, confidential and available any time.
